Four people who improve local education are receiving Heart of Amphi awards from the Amphitheater Public Schools Foundation.

Robert Workman, Anne Wheaton, and Robert and Carla Springer are being recognized at the Amphi Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, March 28, at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador resort.

The Heart of Amphi awards honor individuals or groups who have “exemplified the foundation’s mission of promoting academic excellence by enriching the education, development, and/or well being of students either in a particular school or throughout the school district,” a release said.

Robert Workman of Workman Insurance and Investments is the recipient of the award in the business leader category. Workman served on the Amphi Foundation board for 10 years, and was its president from 1997 to 2000. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous fundraising events, secured new grant and matching funds, enhanced the sports fee waiver program, and created the emergency medical assistance fund. He and his wife, Cathy, continue to be involved in supporting Amphitheater schools.

As a physical education teacher at Mesa Verde Elementary, Anne Wheaton “exemplifies the spirit of the awards through her passion for teaching and her dedication to each student,” the release continued. She encourages students to stay active through a traditional PE curriculum and with activities such as boomerangs, cup stacking, tennis, bowling, golf, in-line skating, and team-building games.

“She believes in everyone’s abilities, and makes sure her students — all her students — have moments to shine. She teaches with humor and energy and high expectations,” said Sarah Tucker, a colleague who nominated Wheaton for the award. Wheaton also coordinates the annual district-wide elementary track meet.

When Robert and Carla Springer retired and moved to SaddleBrooke, they began to look for ways get involved as volunteers. They have since dedicated themselves to improving the math skills of students at several schools. The MathPLUS+ tutoring program developed by the Springers now involves more than 60 volunteers who work one-on-one with students in the classroom using AccMath software. Mr. and Mrs. Springer not only volunteer in the classroom themselves, but also spend time developing new computerized lessons teachers can use to meet the Arizona state math standards. Their efforts have contributed to Coronado K-8 School moving from a “performing school” to an “excelling school,” where 40 percent of fourth-grade students now exceed the standards on the AIMS math test.

Coronado principal Monica Nelson said “the Springers’ efforts and accomplishments will open doors of opportunity for our students to do things they never would have thought possible.”

Tickets to the March 28 gala are $115 per person or $1,100 for a table of 10, and can be purchased online at www.amphifoundation.org or by calling the Foundation at 696-5147.
